Filming a St-Patrick’s day music show

I recently filmed, mixed and edited a very special St-Patrick’s concert. On March 5th 2022, I greeted talented musicians Esmé Cavanaugh, Jeff Deeprose and Patrick Hutchinson in my humble studio at an undisclosed place in the middle of the forest. Accompanied by Carole Gravel, the group not only had with them their instruments, but also brought a comfortable vibe of camaraderie that made this project one of the most pleasant I’ve had the opportunity to work on in a long time. Roughly 45 minutes, this quaint little performance delves into a fascinating repertoire of Irish traditional music that is perfect for St-Patrick’s day. This musical event is set to be broadcast online via the social media channels of the English Community Organization of Lanaudière on March 17th 2022 at 7PM.

This was actually my second time filming a live musical event for ‘ECOL‘. A year before, It had been a privilege to film Alain Lépine at his rehearsal studio in Rawdon. As always, I was very happy to work alongside Carole Gravel, Project Officer at ECOL, musician and all around great person.

To be completely honest, I was initially a tad stressed moving forward with this elaborate audiovisual production. Not only was I taking on the challenge of setting the stage, ironing curtains and placing lights, but I also had to make room for my cameras and figure out the needed audio equipment. Thankfully, I couldn’t have asked for a more capable ‘delegate producer’ in Carole. Uniquely supportive, her background and love for music gave her the right skill set to take on the logistics for this production. Her indispensable contribution allowed me to focus on my work.

Although this was a small recital, the production nevertheless required careful planning and care in order to figure out the necessary audio equipment for this specific event. Being a musician and podcaster, I’m no stranger to studio life and I knew what to expect. And so, once the show started, any stress melted away and I felt like a fish in water. As the recording progressed, I couldn’t help but think back on my studies back in 2013. That formative year in Montreal was so unbelievably important. It allowed me to acquire a very important diploma in audio production techniques which opened the door to where I am today. I need to thank my teachers at Musitechnic. I had all of you in mind as I worked the mixer and adjusted my compressors.

I won’t spend too much time describing the band’s amazing presence or give more details about the production. Instead, I invite you to go watch the show on YouTube and to share the link every St-Patrick’s day for the coming years. As in any project, I am relentless in my work ethics and the introspection which follows. In my line of work, there is an obligation to constantly update equipment and rehearse techniques. It is a never ending demand that is challenging and yet, surprisingly fulfilling. It makes it even more worthwhile when the people involved in a project are fun to work with. Such was the case here. All in all, the project went unbelievably well. Thank you to everybody involved.

In closing, I would like to thank Esmé Cavanaugh, Jeff Deeprose and Patrick Hutchinson for their impeccable musicianship. It was a delight to work with them on this project and to film them in this live format. Also, many thanks to Carole Gravel from the English Community Organization of Lanaudière ECOL. Thank you to Guillaume and Bridget for their help with curtains and preparations.
